“Spiritual disciplines” are things we do to stay in love with God and grow in faith.  They can be things we do alone or together; they can be ways to spend time with God or to serve others.  As the people of Sylva First UMC share one of their spiritual disciplines with you each week, we hope it will inspire you to new ways of loving God and growing in faith.

I’m Vivian Wisdom.  I’m originally from southern Illinois.  I have been a part of Sylva FUMC since 2005 when James and I moved here from Arkansas.

I heard all my life that Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world.  When I was 25, I took Jesus as my personal Savior when I heard the gospel preached.  I started reading my Bible and going to Church and Sunday School.  In my 30’s I started going to Bible Study Fellowship and learned about having a quiet time with God every day.  I started with a devotional Bible.  Then I started using Daily Guideposts devotional books.  Now I start my day with the Upper Room, Daily Bread and Daily Guidepost devotions and a prayer time.  I also started reading the daily scriptures that Pastor Mary puts in the weekly newsletter.  I started going to Bible Study Fellowship again in 2016 after Jim passed away.  Getting in the word every day and having a time of prayer for my family and church family keeps me centered on God and His will for my life.
