“Spiritual disciplines” are things we do to stay in love with God and grow in faith. They can be things we do alone or together; they can be ways to spend time with God or to serve others. As the people of Sylva First UMC share one of their spiritual disciplines with you each week, we hope it will inspire you to new ways of loving God and growing in faith.
Hey, I’m Mabry Bumgarner! I’m 16 years old, and I’ve been apart of Sylva FUMC for a few months now. I’ve lived my entire life in Whittier, NC; just a little town on the border of Jackson county where my father grew up!I’ve been blessed to attend church most of my life, and I’ve also been able to gain habits along the way, to help myself grow closer not only to God, but closer towards Jesus, and his word! One thing that has always kept me steered towards bringing glory to god, would be daily prayers and talks with him and his son! I wake up in the morning for a prayer session, usually before work or football practice; and that can include me journaling thoughts about scripture, my choices, what I’m grateful for, etc. Then before I go to bed I take time to tell God thank you for helping me survive the day and I also try to reflect on the decisions I’ve made. This helps me a lot! Especially since, a lot of times in our lives, our minds can get very cluttered with outside voices or opinions honing in to steer you away from Christ. Prayer allows me to shut those voices out, and focus on one person, God. Not only he himself, but what he has done for me, for others, my family, and what he has helped me accomplish in life. We’re all not perfect, but with the help of the lord and his son, their guidance can put you in the right direction towards a better life and salvation!
